The 24-Hour Emergency Job Hunt
David E. Perry — Podcast Script
“Tony, I want to talk about this because I’m watching some very good recruiters and TA people get hammered by Reductions in Force (RIFs) right now. These are people who’ve spent their careers helping everybody else navigate the hiring process—and suddenly they’re on the other side of the desk. I want to give them something practical they can do in the first 24 hours to get out of shock, get moving, and start creating opportunities instead of waiting for them.”
Here’s the problem.
Somebody gets laid off at 9:00 Monday morning.
By 9:30, they’re in shock.
By 10:00, they’re rewriting their résumé.
By lunch, they’ve turned on the green Open to Work banner.
By dinner, they’ve applied to 20 jobs online.
And then they wait.
That’s exactly backwards.
The first 24 hours after a layoff are incredibly important because you’ve got two enemies.
The obvious one is unemployment.
The dangerous one is inertia.
Shock makes people freeze. And once you stop moving, a day becomes three days. Three days becomes a week.
So I’ve developed what I call
The 24-Hour Emergency Job Hunt.
The objective isn’t to find a job in 24 hours.
The objective is to build enough forward momentum so that, within 24 hours, you’re no longer sitting there wondering what happens next.
You’re creating what happens next.
Hour 1: Secure The Evidence
Don’t start with your résumé.
Start with proof.
What did you actually accomplish?
What problems did you solve?
What numbers moved because you were there?
Revenue. Costs. Productivity. Customers. Projects. People. Time. Risk.
Write it all down.
And don’t tell me you were “responsible for” something.
Nobody cares what you were responsible for.
Tell me what changed because you were there.
Problem.
Action.
Result.
That’s your ammunition.
Hour 2: Build Your Proof Sheet
Now take the best five examples and put them on one page.
I call it a Proof Sheet.
Not a résumé.
The headline might simply be: Here's What I Know How to Fix.
Five problems.
Five actions.
Five measurable results.
Something a person can read in 60 seconds and forward to somebody else.
Because I want the hiring manager thinking:
We have that problem.
Not: Interesting résumé.
Big difference.
Hour 3: Pick Your Lane
This is where people panic.
They say:
“I’m open to anything.”
No, you’re not.
And even if you are, don't tell the market that.
Because “anything” gives your network absolutely nothing to work with.
Pick a lane.
For a recruiter, maybe it’s technical recruiting.
Executive search.
Corporate Talent Acquisition.
Contract recruiting.
Talent leadership.
For somebody else, maybe it’s sales leadership, operations, finance or engineering.
You can change lanes later.
But right now:
One problem. One market. One outcome.
Confusion kills referrals.
Clarity creates them.
Hour 3 to 5: Build your Power25
Now forget the 3,000 people you're connected to on LinkedIn.
Who are the 25 people who actually know you?
Former bosses.
Customers.
Colleagues.
People you've helped.
Executives.
Vendors.
People who have watched you operate.
Those are your Power 25.
And here's where most people screw it up.
They send:
“Hey Tony, I've been laid off. Let me know if you hear of anything.”
What the hell am I supposed to do with that?
Instead, say:
“I've unexpectedly found myself on the market. I'm particularly good at solving X problem for Y kind of company. Who comes to mind that I should be talking to?”
Now you've given me a pattern to match.
And notice something else.
You didn't ask me for a job.
You asked me for intelligence.
Hour 5 to 8: Start Ten Conversations
Not 100 applications.
Ten conversations.
You're not looking for sympathy.
You're looking for movement.
You want somebody thinking:
I know exactly where David could help.
Not:
Poor David. I hope something turns up.
Those are two completely different outcomes.
Hour 8 to 12: List your Top 20
Now we go hunting.
Pick 20 companies.
But don't start by asking:
“Who has a job posted for me?”
Ask:
“Who has a problem I know how to solve?”
Look for triggers.
New CEO.
Acquisition.
Funding.
Expansion.
New geography.
Leadership change.
Big contract.
Lots of open jobs.
Rapid growth.
Turnaround.
Something is happening inside that business.
Change creates problems.
Problems create opportunities.
This is something recruiters understand instinctively.
They spend their careers finding people who aren't looking for jobs.
Well, now we're going to turn the telescope around.
Find the job that isn't looking for you yet.
Hour 12 to 16: Create Proof Before They Ask
This is my favourite part.
Do some of the work before they hire you.
If you're a recruiter, build a 30-60-90-day talent plan.
If you're a sales executive, show me where you'd attack the market.
If you're an operations executive, identify three operating problems you'd investigate first.
If you're a CFO, show me what you'd want to understand about cash, margins or working capital.
Don't give away the farm.
Give them enough to see how your brain works.
Because now you're not saying:
Please hire me.
You're saying:
Here's how I think about your problem.
That's powerful.
Hour 16 to 20: Five Surgical Attacks
Now pick the five best companies from your Top 20.
Find the person who owns the problem.
And approach them directly.
Your message has three pieces.
A trigger.
A hypothesis.
And proof.
Something like:
“I noticed you're expanding into two new markets. That usually puts pressure on X. I've dealt with that before. I put together three things I'd look at in the first 90 days. Worth 15 minutes?”
That's it.
You're not asking for an interview.
You're starting a business conversation.
And Tony, here's the beautiful part.
That doesn't sound unemployed.
It sounds useful.
Hour 20 to 24: Go Public
Only now do I want you broadcasting that you're available.
And please don't post:
“Unfortunately, I've been impacted by restructuring. Please like and share for reach.”
There are thousands of those.
Instead:
“After 12 years solving X problem, I'm unexpectedly available. Here are the three things I'm exceptionally good at fixing…”
Then tell them.
Make your network understand exactly where you belong.
If I were RIF'd tomorrow, I'd probably start my own post with:
“Well, this is awkward.”
“I've spent nearly 40 years telling people how to find jobs. This morning I had to take my own advice.”
Then I'd tell them exactly what I did that day.
Because I'd follow this same damn plan myself.
👉🏻 The 24-Hour Scoreboard: now what?
At the end of 24 hours, I will have...
- 25 high-value relationships identified.
- Ten contacted.
- Twenty target companies mapped.
- Five surgical approaches launched.
- A Proof Sheet.
- At least one piece of intellectual property demonstrating how you think.
- And several actual conversations underway.
Will everybody hit every number?
No.
I don't care.
Because the purpose of the first 24 hours isn't perfection.
It's momentum.
And Now We Have AI
This is the part that makes me wish I'd had today's technology 30 years ago.
AI can help you research those 20 companies.
Find trigger events.
Organize your accomplishments.
Turn raw evidence into Problem-Action-Result statements.
Prepare for calls.
Analyze job descriptions.
Research decision-makers.
Help build a 30-60-90 plan.
Generate message variations.
It can compress days of work into hours.
But there's a trap.
AI isn't the guerrilla. You are.
AI can't give you courage.
It can't replace judgment.
It can't build genuine relationships.
And if your thinking is mediocre, AI will simply help you produce beautifully written mediocrity faster.
Use AI as the force multiplier.
Not the strategy.
Bottom line
If you've just been laid off, you don't need to spend the next week getting ready to job hunt.
You're job hunting now.
First 24 hours:
Build the proof.
Pick the lane.
Activate the network.
Map the market.
Find the problems.
Demonstrate how you solve them.
Start conversations.
Then keep going.
That's actually why we've built JobHackers.Global.
The 24-Hour Emergency Job Hunt is designed to get somebody off the floor and back on offense.
But then you've got to build the campaign.
Positioning.
Targeting.
Networking.
AI.
Direct outreach.
Interview strategy.
References.
Closing.
All of it.
That's what we're building at JobHackers.Global.
Because the job market has changed.
The technology has changed.
The rules have changed.
But one thing hasn't.
The person who creates the opportunity has a hell of an advantage over the person waiting for one.
That's the whole idea.
Don't wait to be picked.
Go hunting.
“Go to JobHackers.Global. Start with the free material, run the 24-hour plan, and then use the system to turn that first burst of activity into a disciplined job-hunting campaign.”
