What is a “My Lane Statement” and how do you create it?
What it is
A My Lane Statement is one sentence that tells people:
- who you help
- what result you help them get
- how you do it
- when you’re most useful (the messy situation)
Think of it like a “This is what I’m good at” sentence — but clear and specific, not fluffy.
If you don’t have a lane statement, you sound like:
“I’m open to anything.”And that makes people unsure where to place you.
How to create it (easy steps)
Use this simple template:
I help {WHO} achieve {RESULT} by {METHOD}, especially when {CONSTRAINT}.
Step-by-step:
- WHO = Which group of people at work do you help?Examples: sales teams, project teams, founders, customer support, operations teams
- RESULT = What gets better because of you?Examples: faster delivery, higher revenue, fewer mistakes, lower costs
- METHOD = What do you actually do to make it better?Examples: fix process, build systems, coach people, improve tools, plan better
- CONSTRAINT = When is it messy and they really need help?Examples: growth chaos, deadlines slipping, lots of change, too many problems at once
Example
I help project teams hit deadlines by improving planning and accountability, especially when the schedule is slipping and everyone is firefighting.
Another example:
I help sales teams grow pipeline by improving targeting and follow-up, especially when leads are coming in but deals aren’t closing.
